Comparison of adjectives and adverbs (stopniowanie)

Adjectives (jaki?) and adverbs (jak?) have three degrees: positive (ładny, szybko), comparative (ładniejszy, szybciej) and superlative (najładniejszy, najszybciej).

Simple comparison

The comparative is formed with the ending -szy or -ejszy, and the superlative by adding naj- to the comparative. We add -szy when the stem ends in a single consonant, and -ejszy when it ends in a consonant cluster.

Comparison with bardziej / najbardziej

Long adjectives and participles are compared with the words bardziej / najbardziej: zmęczony → bardziej zmęczony → najbardziej zmęczony; interesujący → bardziej interesujący. In the opposite direction we use mniej / najmniej: mniej ciekawy, najmniej popularny.

Adverbs

Adverbs ending in -o and -e take the ending -ej in the comparative, often with a consonant change: szybko → szybciej → najszybciej, wolno → wolniej, często → częściej, późno → później, łatwo → łatwiej, drogo → drożej, blisko → bliżej, daleko → dalej.

How to compare

  • niż + nominative: Anna jest starsza niż Marek.
  • od + genitive: Anna jest starsza od Marka.
  • Superlative + z + genitive, or w + locative: najwyższy z braci, najstarsze miasto w Polsce.
  • The same degree: taki sam jak, tak samo jak: Mój telefon jest taki sam jak twój.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ bardziej lepszy → ✓ lepszy. Don't combine the two ways of comparing.
  • ✗ dobrzejszy → ✓ lepszy.
  • ✗ starszy od Marek → ✓ starszy od Marka or: starszy niż Marek.
