Instrumental (narzędnik): kim? czym?

The instrumental answers the questions kim? czym? It tells us who someone is, what we do something with, how we travel and who we spend time with.

When we use the instrumental

  • After „być” and „zostać” with a noun (job, nationality, role): Jestem nauczycielką. On jest Polakiem. Chcę zostać lekarzem.
  • When we talk about a tool or a means of transport – without a preposition: piszę długopisem, jem widelcem, jadę autobusem, lecę samolotem.
  • After the verbs interesować się, zajmować się, opiekować się, martwić się, kierować: interesuję się sportem, opiekuję się dzieckiem.
  • After the prepositions z (together with someone / something), przed, za, nad, pod, między – when we say WHERE something is: kawa z mlekiem, idę z bratem, czekam przed domem, kot śpi pod stołem, mieszkamy nad morzem.

Personal pronouns

Nominative (mianownik)Instrumental (narzędnik)
jaze mną
tyz tobą
on, onoz nim
onaz nią
myz nami
wyz wami
oni, onez nimi

Before „mną” and before a consonant cluster starting with s, z, ś, ż we write „ze”: ze mną, ze szklanką, ze znajomymi.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Jestem lekarz → ✓ Jestem lekarzem. But after „to” we use the nominative: To jest lekarz.
  • An adjective on its own after „być” stays in the nominative: Jestem zmęczony. The instrumental appears with a noun: Jest dobrym lekarzem.
  • ✗ Jadę z autobusem → ✓ Jadę autobusem. A means of transport takes no preposition; „z” is used only with a person: jadę z kolegą.
  • Przed, za, nad, pod with movement (dokąd?) take the accusative: kładę książkę pod stół, but: książka leży pod stołem. Jadę nad morze, but: odpoczywam nad morzem.
