Accusative (biernik): kogo? co?

The accusative answers the questions kogo? co? Most often it is the object of a verb, that is, it names the person or thing the action is directed at: Czytam książkę. Odwiedzam babcię.

When we use the accusative

  • After most transitive verbs: mieć, lubić, kochać, znać, widzieć, czytać, pisać, jeść, pić, kupować, oglądać, robić, odwiedzać: Mam siostrę. Kupuję chleb.
  • After prepositions that express direction or purpose (dokąd? po co?): na, w, przez, za, o, po: idę na pocztę, jadę w góry, idę przez park, dziękuję za prezent, proszę o pomoc, idę po bułki.
  • In time expressions: w poniedziałek, w sobotę, na tydzień, przez godzinę, co tydzień, cały dzień.
  • Note: after negation the accusative changes to the genitive: mam psa → nie mam psa, lubię herbatę → nie lubię herbaty.

Singular endings

masculine animate (people, animals)

Ending: -a, as in the genitive

Examples: brat → brata, kot → kota, lekarz → lekarza

masculine inanimate

Ending: no change, as in the nominative

Examples: chleb → chleb, telefon → telefon, samochód → samochód

feminine in -a

Ending: -ę

Examples: kawa → kawę, siostra → siostrę, książka → książkę

feminine ending in a consonant

Ending: no change

Examples: noc → noc, rzecz → rzecz, miłość → miłość

neuter

Ending: no change

Examples: okno → okno, mleko → mleko, zdjęcie → zdjęcie

Exception: pani → panią (Znam panią Ewę).

Adjectives: masculine animate -ego (mojego brata), masculine inanimate no change (nowy telefon), feminine -ą (nową książkę), neuter no change (duże okno).

Plural endings

masculine personal (groups that include a man)

Form: same as the genitive

Examples: Znam tych studentów. Odwiedzam braci. Zapraszam kolegów.

all others (things, animals, women)

Form: same as the nominative

Examples: Kupuję książki. Mam dwa koty. Lubię te koleżanki.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Mam brat → ✓ Mam brata. A masculine animate noun takes the ending -a in the accusative.
  • ✗ Piję kawa → ✓ Piję kawę.
  • „Do” always takes the genitive, not the accusative: ✗ idę do sklep → ✓ idę do sklepu.
  • Not every verb takes the accusative: interesuję się muzyką (instrumental), szukam pracy (genitive), pomagam mamie (dative).
